The Menace of Piracy Not Likely to Subside Easily
With the final publication of Lord Carter’s Digital Britain report coming up, a research firm, PaidContent:UK in its study found that warning letters would prove to be futile as a measure to curb the fast growing menace of media file copying or online piracy.
According to the comparisons made from the survey titled The Digital Entertainment Survey, an increase of 10% was seen this year from last year’s 70% of people who felt that the threat of disconnection of broadband along with warning letters served as a deterrent to violation of copyright.
Significantly, last year’s respondents were given to understand that warning letters were a precursor to strict action, while this year’s respondents were told to consider the warning letter as an isolated thing, independent of any further action by the ISP. Thus, less than half of this year’s respondents would cease their illegal downloading if they received only a warning letter. To keep up-to-date with the latest broadband news, and information on all the providers, including Tiscali Broadband, refer to Broadband Genie, they also offer really good broadband advice.
The CEO of Carphone Warehouse, Mr. Charles Dunstone, while speaking to The Guardian recently expressed his concern about the way piracy was increasing. He pointed at the inefficiency of mere warning letters to control the issue of file sharing. He said that pirates cannot be dealt with through legal action and they will continue with what they are doing now without being bothered by threats. Moreover, any attempts to use technical solutions to stop piracy would only result in even more advanced methods of file sharing.
