Keep Your Home Safe While on Vacation

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 6:23 am

One of the times your home is most vulnerable is when it is left empty for an extended period of time. Darkened windows, unretrieved mail or newspapers and closed windows in hotter weather all advertise your absence to a potential burglar.

Here are a few steps you should take while on vacation to help keep your home safe and secure:

•The best protection for your apartment during your absence is to have a house sitter. A friend you trust staying at your house can take care of your pets and/or plants in addition to making sure the house is inhabited.

•Have a neighbor check on your apartment while you’re away ~ turning on lights, radios or TVs and opening and closing curtains will give your apartment the appearance of someone home.

•If you don’t have a friend or neighbor to housesit or check your apartment while you’re away ~ perhaps even if you do — you should keep not only lights but also a TV or radio on a timer. If you’re like me and have your TV on almost all the time you’re home [NOTE: I don't watch it, it's just background noise.], the absence of the sound and that blueish light in the windows announces that you’re not there.

•Make sure whoever is checking your apartment while you’re away knows how to work your alarm system and who to call in case of a problem.

•Unless you have a house sitter, stop your mail and any newspaper or other delivery.
Nothing announces an empty apartment better than a stack of newspapers or an overflowing mailbox. Ask a nearby neighbor to pick up any packages delivered while you’re gone.

•If you have a garden or plants on your balcony, make sure someone is watering the plants regularly or put the plants where they can’t be seen. Plants slowly dying due to lack of water may announce your absence.

•Check your lease. Many landlords require that you notify them if your apartment is going to be left empty for any period of time (this is so they can enter in case of emergency even if they can’t reach you). If you’ve got a house sitter this isn’t necessary

How to get the cheaper vacations!

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 6:05 am

Did you know that even the best discount travel sites list prices high above wholesale? Because they need to make a profit, just like everyone else.
So how could you get prices this low, without being a reseller yourself? Without having to BUY the rights to these prices, meaning you pay money before you even buy anything? Travel Packages are quite often a viable answer. Many companies offer these packages at a low rate, offering you tons of vacations for less than the cost of one single trip.
But here’s another problem – what if you don’t like all of the vacations in the package? Most of them are not transferable. You could re-sell them on online auction sites or similar places, but the best solution is to read the fine print first. If you are going to buy a vacation or travel package, always read the details. They are few and far between, but you CAN find discount vacation packages in which everything is transferable. Meaning you’re not paying for anything you don’t want – you can give them away as gifts, sell them individually, or – if you own a business – use the unwanted trips as employee incentives. How would you like to get a luxury cruise just for being employee of the month? I know I would like that.
So, as you can see, it is NOT impossible to get cheap, or even FREE vacations. You just have to look! I’ve done some of the looking for you. Here is one package I purchased (I bought the Level II package) and have never looked back! Check out their website. http://coastalvacations.f2g.net

Cologne Germany — 18 Insider Tips — Part 2 of 2

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 7:12 pm

Cologne Germany has a lot to offer, and in this second part I give you the remaining 10 insider tips you surely already were looking for…

Old town of Cologne Germany is the starting point for most people. It is world-wide well-known from lots of postcards. Old houses, countless churches, Cologne Cathedral, taverns, restaurants, pubs, cramped alleys, Rhine river…

The city offers an unparalleled selection of more than 3,000 bars, restaurants and breweries, the highest number per capita than anywhere else in Germany.

Anyway, shall we get started? Great!

TOP 10 Bars and Restaurants

9. The proven best restaurant in Cologne Germany is the Boersen-Restaurant (Stock-Market Restaurant), located in a street called Unter Sachsenhausen No. 10-26. It consists of the Restaurant Maitre, the Boersen-Stube, Boersen-Schaenke, and several meeting rooms. Yummy!

10. Three Frenchmen created this terrific restaurant called “Le Moissonnier,” located in Krefelder Str. 25. Once you enter this “tavern,” you’ll feel the spirit the three chiefs spray throughout the rooms.

11. When Bruno Spatola, Chief of the restaurant “Da Bruno,” opened his restaurant in the mid-90’s, he didn’t think it would become that great success. Even a South-German newspaper is considering Da Bruno as “The Best Italian of Germany.” You find this exquisite gourmet temple in Suerther Hauptstrasse 157 in the district Suerth.

12. Cologne’s smallest restaurant “Capricorn [i] Aries Restaurant” is located in the heart of the southern part of the city (Altenburgerstrasse 34). It was built in a monument-protected house in modern-elegant ambience. Rewarded with a Michelin star, Klaus Jaquemod cooks fine French cuisine. The area is being held completely in white, contains four tables for maximally 16 guests, and, at late hour, it uses a special light system to change itself into different colors. Awesome.

13. The “Vintage” is a restaurant, in which you can enjoy more than 600 (!) high-quality wines at reasonable prices in a pleasant atmosphere with good cuisine for large and small hunger. You can buy the wines of your favours. The kitchen has been awarded several times as one of the TOP ones in Cologne Germany and Germany wide. You find it in downtown, Pfeilstrasse 31.

14. Excelsior Hotel Ernst, located right nearby Cologne Cathedral in Trankgasse 1, is a 5-Star Hotel. It contains the Hanse Stube, which is famous for its innovative French cuisine and culinary finesse. In the taku, Japanese cuisine in the tradition of Asian culinary art and hospitality is going to be served. Further the Piano Bar, in which you can easily relax and forget about the daily routine.

15. Not to injustice, the “Bizim” is considered as “The Noble Turk” of Cologne Germany. Faraway of Doener and Lamacun (usual meals at Turkish snack bars), their menu proves how variously the Turkish cuisine can be. Hint: a punctual table reservation is absolutely necessary! The Bizim is located in Weidengasse 47, and considered as an insider tip.

16. The “Gaffel Haus,” located at Alter Markt 20, is considered as a place at which the culture of hospitality is maintained. In the last 600 years, Cologne became the scene for liberty and democracy; and the Gaffel House shows some historical facts as it was the tradition house for Cologne’s Gaffel.

17. Whether you would like to dance, watch other people, or relax in a beer garden with up to 1,200 people (!), the “Herbrand’s” is definitely a place where you can forget the everyday life. Located in district Ehrenfeld, Herbrandstrasse 21, you will like the architectural building and surrounding.

18. Stroll through the traditional Muehlengasse in old town of Cologne Germany, and take a rest in “Peters Brauhaus” (Peter’s Brewing House). Fine brewing atmosphere mixed with traditional Cologne cuisine let you easily relax after heavy sightseeing.

Now, visit http://www.smart-travel-germany.com/cologne.html for further information, and for some pictures of Cologne Germany.

So, whatever you are going to do in Cologne Germany, enjoy it! :-) This city is definitely worth staying longer than one day. I myself lived 17 years of my life in this carnivalistic stronghold.

Choose The Best Beach In Jamaica For You

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 5:16 pm

People, obviously, have different needs and different styles. What constitutes a great beach for one person may not be all that enjoyable for another. What makes Jamaica a great travel destination is that, as an island nation, there are a variety of beaches to choose from. Knowing what you want and where to find it will help you to make the very most of that precious vacation time.

There are the classic Caribbean beaches that feature the traditional joys of pristine white sand and blue, blue waters. But, there are also the craggy, undeveloped beaches that are perfectly suited for those hoping to avoid crowds or for those who best enjoy nature in its natural state. There are beaches known for the gentle waters that are perfect for families with children visiting Jamaica and still others with rougher waters and currents that attract surfers. There are beaches known for their active social scene and others that are serene and quiet.

In Montego Bay, Doctor’s Cave Beach is one fine example of the classic Caribbean vacation beach. Five miles of fine, white sand beach that borders clear, cool waters attract visitors to Jamaica from all over. Because of its broad popularity, it is likely to be frequently crowded. Cornwall Beach is another lovely, white sand beach found in Montego Bay.

In Negril, some of the most wild, untouched areas by the sea can be found. Craggy cliffs, amazing beauty, solitude – all of these are what bring naturalists to these shore areas in Jamaica. Crane Beach, by Black River, is a beach that has not been overdeveloped and is notable for the naturalness of its environment.

For families, especially with young children, there are several beaches in Jamaica known for their gentle waters that lack the strong currents and undertows found in other areas, making swimming safer for young or inexperienced swimmers. Among the best of these are the Walter Fletcher Beach in Montego Bay, San San Beach in Port Antonio, Blue Lagoon Beach, which is also in Port Antonio, and Dunn’s River Beach, located in Ocho Rios, fairly close to the famous waterfalls of the same name.

Surfers love Boston Beach, where surfing equipment is easy to rent. The beaches of Long Bay are said to offer the most consistent waves in Jamaica, and on the southwest coast, Treasure Beach can offer adventure to the surfer. Swimmers should take care, though, as the undercurrent can be strong.

Those in search of beaches that combine the joys of sun, sand and surf with an active social scene or party scene will certainly enjoy Frenchman’s Cove in Port Antonio. Another favorite spot is Seven Mile Beach in Negril.

Jamaica is a lovely island nation with approximately 200 miles of beaches. There are beaches to suit most every taste, ranging from family beaches to nude sun bathing beaches, from peaceful and natural surroundings to the pristine white sands and full services of the resorts, from beaches perfect for active water sports beaches to known for their active social scene. A little planning will help you to choose the best beach in Jamaica for you.

Believe It or Not

Would you believe that a tree can turn into a stone? What is this? A myth? A fantasy? Or a lie? Maybe you have read books that tell stories of people turned to stones. I have read from the Holy Bible about Lot’s wife who was turned into a pillar of salt. Now, can a tree really turn into a stone?

While traveling from east to west in the US along the Interstate freeway 40, I chanced upon an ad about petrified woods. Petrify means to change something into a stony mass. With the existence of the word “petrify” alone made me think probably there could be some truth in this phenomenon – yet a shadow of doubt still existed in my mind.

Finally, I happened to find a pamphlet about the Petrified Forest National Park! Wow! It is not just a single tree but even a forest! Since I don’t travel this route often, I took the chance to examine the place myself.

The Petrified Forest National Park is situated in the northeastern region of Arizona. The park covers thousands of acres of land. Thus visiting the area on foot is impractical. To visit the place as you travel I-40, take Exit #311.

It features a beautiful scenery with hills that look like they were painted. There are hill formations that resemble a tepee. There are areas where you can find tree stumps and logs that have been cut into pieces. On a closer look, these are the petrified woods! These dead trees have become highly mineralized that they have become stony hard. A petrified wood may have beautiful colorful features that you may find within the structure.

Unfortunately, no forested lands with free standing petrified trees can be found in these places, nor can you even find a single free standing petrified tree! But some experts claim that these areas used to be forested years and years ago.

As a warning, taking a petrified wood or a fossil out of the park for souvenir is not allowed. However, just before leaving the park, a souvenir store is present where visitors can purchase their own souvenirs. A piece of petrified wood can cost from $5 and even more.

The park also features some places where its early inhabitants have lived. Early writings of these people can also be found along the big rocks in the area.

Well, there’s the evidence. Check out the place yourself and see if a petrified wood do really exist.

Are Your Family Vacations Fun and Relaxing?

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 3:56 pm

How many of you have seen the classic Chevy Chase movie, “National Lampoon’s Vacations?”
If you haven’t then you should, but if you have (and are probably laughing right now), then you’ll remember the mishaps the Griswold family went through traveling across country to Wally World Theme Park.

Well, family vacations don’t have to be that way. With a little planning, you can ensure little headaches, relaxation, and most important, fun!!

With that being said, here are some top tips for having a great family vacation…

**Plan ahead. Get all the guides, maps, & information you can get your hands on. If you travel with kids, sit down and plan out things to do, see, and so forth. It can be a fun thing to do before you leave and get everyone excited about the trip. For kids, renting movies (Disney, Vacation movies) can be fun also. Although the Griswold’s had a heck of a time and planned ahead, be sure you know what to do in crazy circumstances- have a plan.

**How are you getting there? Taking your own car may pose problems. We typically fly, but if you decide to drive, weigh out the options of taking your own vehicle or renting one. Now, if your family car is newer, has a DVD player, and plenty of room, then it may be the best way to go to keep everyone busy. Otherwise, look into flying or renting a car for the trip.

**Does everyone have stuff to do? Keep the kids and spouse pre-occupied during the trip. Books, games, movies, toys, and so on are must have items. Remember, waiting in airports can be boring and long drives can be rough with antsy kids in the back. I am an adult and even I have a tough time. Don’t forget things to do while you’re there as well.
**Did you take care of the mundane details? Is the family pet taken care of? Did you consider travel insurance? What about other important documents? Did you get discount tickets and coupons? Who is watching the house, getting the mail, etc…? What is everyone packing and is there room for all that stuff? These are important details many people wait until the last minute or forget to handle causing them to rush around or make cell phone calls from the road. Don’t stress by figuring it all out in advance.

**Did you prepare your budget? Maybe you have a ton of money to take, which is what everyone wants. Don’t overdo it though. You can have an awesome vacation without a high-end budget (especially in Florida). I have seen people who go on champagne vacations with a beer budget. Remember, credit cards have to be paid back and the trip is only temporary. We agree, travel is a must, but be smart.

Are you ready to go? Be sure you plan your trip, find the best deals, shop for travel necessities before hand, and have fun doing it- there is a lot to do, but if you make it a headache it will be. If you make it fun and include everyone, then you’ll feel like you’re already on vacation!
Most of us work all year for a vacation. We see little time of each other and vacations are a great way to spend quality time together. Ensure you don’t become the Griswold’s with just a little planning!!

Paradise in Guanahani

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 4:09 pm

Paradise: Guanahani Island

As we wrote in a previous article, in his quest for a briefer route to the Far East, Christopher Columbus landed in an island he called San Salvador, which happens to be Guanahani, as it was named by natives “arahuacos”, part of the Atlantic archipelago today known as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, an array of 700 islands and cays in front of Florida.

Bajamar

An old, though uncertain, legend says that “Bahamas” derives from the Spanish voice “baja mar”, since most of the islands is clearly visible during the ebb tide or “baja mar”.

Nassau –the capital located on the island of New Providence, is the largest city, and commercial centre of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The city has nearly 70% of the entire population of the Bahamas (303,611 inhabitants). Lynden Pindling International Airport, the major airport for the Bahamas, is about 10 miles (16 kilometres) west of Nassau’s downtown, and has daily flights to major cities in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and the Caribbean.

Nassau boasts of Junkanoo, an energetic, colourful street parade of brightly costumed people dancing to the rhythmic sounds of cowbells, drums and whistles.

Junkanoo takes place on December 26th and January 1, beginning in the early hours of the morning (1:00 a.m.) and ending around 10 a.m.. They also have junkanoo June which is a month long celebration akin to Mardi Gras. Festivals begin at sundown.

Within the beauty of its landscape and magnificent coral atoll, diving and snorkell is an outstanding and funny practice.
