Silly Writing Expectations

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 4:03 pm

Do you think you can play the piano like Mozart without any lessons? Can you swim like a fish, never having been in the water before? What about fly an airplane like an expert pilot? Or even bake a cake without a recipe? This is a no-brainer. Of course you cannot. It does not take a genius to figure this out. No one would expect you to be able to do these things unless you were some sort prodigy. But yet on the same token, we expect to be able to write like a best selling author on the first try. No one looks at this as being odd. Yet most of us have had no formal training and very little real practice when it comes to writing.

So what is it that makes us think this way? Why is that we expect to be able to write well from the get go? There is a simple answer to this question. Quite simply, it is because you usually write on a daily basis. Just think about how much you write on a regular basis. We sign our name and address on documents. We write notes to our family. We write memos at work. We write letters to friends and family. We make to do lists and grocery lists. And we jot down reminder notes. That seems like quite a bit. All of this is writing, but it is not “writing.”

What that means is very simple. Think about it for a second. There is not a plot to your grocery store list or main character in your to do list. These are two totally different kinds of writing. One requires thought and planning while the other does not. What it all boils down to is as with anything, practice makes perfect. To become good at writing, you have to write. It’s as simple as that. To be good at writing short stories, you have to practice writing short stories. To be good at writing articles, you have to practice writing articles. To be good at writing poems, you have to practice writing poetry.

Bestseller status may still not be just around the corner. What that means is do not expect your first to be great. It is possible, but highly unlikely your first attempt will be a masterpiece. It takes a lot of hard work to be a good writer. You have to practice, practice and then practice a little bit more. With each new piece that you write, you will find your skills improving. To speed this up a bit, read the advice of experts. There are many to choose from. A good start is Stephen King’s On Writing and Gary Provost’s 100 Ways to Improve Your Writing. Give these a try and see how they work for you. Soon, you will be writing in ways you never thought possible. I’d love to hear about your progress. Drop me a line and let me know how you are doing. shaniaduncan@altimatepublishing.com

This year climber Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Chomolungma or Mount Everest

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 3:42 pm

With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Andrew Brash noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. Nevertheless, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Min Bahadur Sherchan with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. The Chinese were flying their airplanes over the Mount Everest and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. Andrew Brash and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

Further, he was all too aware of the potential dangers Everest could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. This season French mountaineer Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Chomolungma after reaching the peak of Mont Blanc in France earlier this season.

“The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on Mount Everest. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though Mt Everest is shared by two countries. More than 3103 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

Sherchan just 25 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

Bahadur Sherchan returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of Mt Everest. Bahadur Sherchan last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

Now that Min Bahadur Sherchan has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

The 74-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Chomolungma. “Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on the Mount Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Andrew Brash returned a hero to Calgarians. Man from Nepal, 76, oldest mountaineer to conquer the summit of Everest His first found him within 240 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. Three years later, Andrew Brash, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Chomolungma or Mount Everest to finish what he had started.

E currency trading – A Highly Recommended Income to Add to your Portfolio

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 10:22 am

Over the next couple of months, I will be examining some of the best money making ideas on the web, examining them in detail, also revealing some of the benefits, and putting to rest some of the concerns people have about being potentially ripped off by what some would call “Scams”.

E currency trading
Better known as E-currency exchanging. This business has been around since the late 90s and is here to stay. Everyone on the internet who buys or sells something may purchase in a foreign currency. As a result, that currency needs to be exchanged to the currency of the vendor who is selling the product. E-currency exchanging provides the perfect platform to do this.
If you go on a holiday and exchange your well earned pounds or dollars for your holiday currency the man who exchanges your pounds or dollars will charge you a fee for the privilege of exchanging the money. With E currency you are the man providing the service that is exchanging the money! Moreover, you charge a fee for exchanging the money.

No customer hassles
The neat thing about this business is there is no need for selling, getting customers, and getting people to look at your products. The customers are already there ready and waiting to exchange e currency.

How much can you make?
This all depends on how much you are willing to put into the system up front. If you started with say, $200 and somebody else invested $1000 the person who invested $1000 will have his portfolio grow a lot faster than the smaller amount. Most people will double there money within 45 days.

What do I need to get started?
You need an e-currency account like e-gold. E-gold is an e-currency account that exchanges any hard currency into the equivalent metal i.e. e-gold. You can access their site here. www.e-gold.com. You cannot fund e-gold directly. You will need an intermediate inxchange service like EMO corp. who take your cash via wire or credit/debit card and then you can buy e-gold via the site. Their site is www.emocorp.com
Then what you need to do is open a DXinOne account. DXinOne are the exchange merchants responsible for performing all the exchanges that occur on the internet. You can create an account here https://www.dxinone.com

Who Else Wants Powerful Business Opportunity Business Cards That Will Pull In Interested Prospects L

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 1:10 am

Copyright 2005 by Mark Meyers http://www.BusinessCardsCenter.info

So you have a great business opportunity to share…

But your business cards don’t seem to have the pull you expected…

Do you know the three (yes only three) things that you need to put on your cards to make them pull in more prospects and help convert more of them to paying members?

Here is the thing with business opportunity business cards:

You likely don’t want to give away too much information about the opportunity on your card!

Yeah! I know this kinda flies in the face of everything you’ve heard about business cards design, but bear with me a bit…

You see, if you put too much information then your prospects won’t have to get in touch with you. They can just check out the sizzle call, or go to the website.

So keep it simple and make it so people have to contact you to get more information.

The first thing you absolutely must have on your business opportunity business card is …

Your picture!

Think about it! When promoting a business opportunity you are trying to build relationships with future clients and partners.

Without your picture on your card, it just sits buried in the pile with the rest and they likely won’t even remember you or your card.

Next you’ve gotta have the best way to contact You (at the best time if necessary). You can go with a few options here if you like, things like day #, night #, cell #, etc… Just don’t fill your card with it.

Finally (and this is the most important piece) you need to have a statement that appeals to the situation that your prospect is in.

You gotta hit their hot buttons!

You want them to read your card and say “Yeah! that is exactly how I feel right now”.

So if you are targeting entry-level clerks or cashiers you might want to put something about long-hours, being tired, and stuff like that.

For a great example of this check out “Super Prospecting With Your Business Cards” on my blog.

Now to be ready for all of your potential prospects hot buttons, you’ll probably need a few versions of your business cards with you.

Grab the “tired” card for the entry-level folks, the “residual income” card for the entreprenuer’s that you talk with and so on.

Okay that’s it!

Design your business cards with these three things and you’ll be leaps-and-bounds ahead of most other business opportunity marketers.

Personal Accounts – Choosing Your Bank

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 3:39 am

While many people are with their bank because they’re used to them or because it seems like an unwanted hassle to change accounts, there can be benefits to shopping around. And just because you keep your main account in one bank, there’s no need to keep all your accounts or credit cards with one firm.

If you have a poor credit rating or a large overdraft, you may find it harder to change banks, but some banks will ‘buy’ your overdraft from you, or offer to convert it into a loan. For a small fee you can request details of your credit rating from Equifax or Experian – the two leading credit reference agencies.

Convenience

Depending on your circumstances, you may find you’d be better off with one of the new internet banks, like Smile or Cahoot. These can give better interest rates, because they have lower overheads than high street banks that have to run branches in ‘real time’. On the other hand, you may rather stick with a large bank you know and trust – perhaps you have a good relationship with your branch manager and can expect extra support when you need it. The larger banks also have plentiful local branches, which could be a plus point if you need to, say, pay in cheques frequently.

Terms

While interest rates are an important consideration, there are other factors to take into account when choosing a bank, such as bank charges. Some banks will charge more than others, for example, if you exceed your overdraft limit or if a cheque bounces. Others will charge extra to provide you with copies of statements. Check that the bank complies with the Banking Code, a UK body that promotes best practise in the financial sector.

Bear in mind too, that some banks will offer excellent terms for new customers in order to attract your business, so it may be worthwhile swapping just to take advantage of these. You may find a lower-interest loan, for example, with a new bank.

Bank policy and corporate ethos

Some institutions offer ‘ethical’ banking, so that you can be sure your money is not being used to fund companies who do not conform to certain criteria. The Co-operative Bank led the way in ethical banking, but there are other banks and investment companies to choose from.

As well as the larger high street banks, there are smaller banks, building societies and friendly societies to consider. While normally associated with savings, some offer current accounts with attractive rates, and many of the new building societies are in fact indistinguishable from banks.

Joseph Kenny writes for the Loans Store and offer more information on personal loans and other loan topics available on site.

Appointment Calendar Software: 4 Critical Features — Part 2

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 2:10 am

Effective appointment calendar software should have the ability to create multiple categories, display a monthly view, create reminders and provide recurrence capability. In this article series I will go in-depth into the above features and show the valuable benefits of each one. In this article the focus is the monthly view.

When your appointment calendar software can provide to you an interactive monthly view, you have the ability to make notes directly onto your calendar page just as you do with paper calendars.

Obviously, the one disadvantage of the paper version is the modification difficulty. With the interactive monthly view of the appointment calendar software, no such difficulty exists you just select, modify and save your notes. Another disadvantage of the monthly view of the paper appointment calendar is the lack of space in which to write your notes. A good monthly view appointment calendar program will alleviate this issue by allowing you to “zoom in” on a particular date.

The “zoom in” capability should expand the calendar block (specific date input box) so that you have plenty of room to make notes. In fact, the “zoom in” feature could zoom the specified calendar block to the size of the monthly view for greatest ease of use and make large data entry a breeze.

To provide quick “zoom in” and “zoom out” capability, the ideal appointment calendar program would allow a click on the box itself to alternate between the zoom states.

The value of an interactive monthly view can be great in respect to time savings and ease of use. If you throw in a zoom feature that provides you with greater utility to make notes, you have a powerful organization tool at your fingertips that will show big dividends in time savings and task accuracy in the near and distant future.

In conclusion, when you bring the power of the monthly view of the paper calendar to the computer world and add the utility features that the computer can bring such as zoom, you can feel confident that you have the tools you need to get the job done better, faster and cheaper. In my next installment (part 3), I will talk about reminders. A definite life saver in this hectic society we live in today. Don’t miss it!

Profile of a New Business – A Working Mum’s Success

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 3:17 am

Taking the plunge is not a decision to be made lightly. My motivation came from the desire to spend as much time as possible with my son. What your motivation may be is up to you, but it must be strong. Owning your own business is hard work, and you must be sure you really want it. I’m not going to talk here about the qualities needed for success, and many other people wax lyrical on what is needed. I’ll give you an indication of how I got here, and where I’m going next, as a guide to how it can be done. It’s not the right way, or the only way, it’s my way. So far it’s going well.

There are few things as heart wrenching to a new mother as the choice between staying at home with the baby, and losing income, social input, the esteem of a career and contact with the world at large, and going back to work, being well off, but coping with the guilt of separation and the fear of missing so many important developments in your child’s life. This is the choice I faced two years ago when pregnant with my first child. My choice may have been easier as I was disillusioned with my career and wanted a change of direction, but the fear of going it alone and severing the ties to financial security just when you need it most was no less real.

At the time, I had a hobby. I liked making jewellery from beads. The beads in my home town were poor quality and expensive. Initially, I didn’t set out to start a business, I just thought I’d buy a few extra on the web, and sell the excess on EBay to fund my own purchases. I had pondered selling my jewellery, but not having a business selling beads.

In the last year of business, I have heard many people sneer at EBay sellers. The assumption is that selling on EBay does not constitute a “real business”. What the business snobs fail to mention is that people make money on EBay. Real money. I was very surprised at how much money I made. So, I bought a few more beads, and sold a few more beads. Very quickly I realised that the money was in selling beads, not jewellery made from beads. At this point I had a nice paying hobby, and contemplated turning it into a full time business.

My first important realisation was that in order to make money doing business professionally I couldn’t rely on wholesalers on this country. There’s nothing wrong with wholesalers, they are a good source of products. But when you purchase from a wholesaler you are paying the manufacturer, an importing agent, customs fees, and the wholesaler’s mark up, then adding your own mark up before selling on. You will either not make much money, or you’ll be too expensive to compete. I started to research manufacturers on the internet, and managed to find some who would be willing to deal in low quantities directly with me. Finding suppliers gets easier as your business ages, as they start to come to you, rather than you looking for them.

The next step is negotiation. Ask the right questions and prices can drop by as much as a third. This is especially useful when your competitors are paying standard prices. You can sell at the same price and make more, or undercut if you wish. Be careful not to sell too cheaply however, as if something is too cheap it’s perceived to be either poor quality or a con.

In selling your product, you need to ensure you have factored in all your costs before setting a price. This seems obvious, but in the early days I forgot to add the overheads of my sales outlets, and as a result made a fraction of what I should have made. You should also set some sort of pricing structure up, as a guide rather than a specific margin.

Now I had a product to sell, and a source to get it from, I needed an outlet. Or two. I decided to stick with EBay, the home of my early successes. EBay is a worldwide community, a global car boot sale. If you have something to sell, there will be someone there who wants to buy it. If there isn’t, don’t bother. However, EBay does have its drawbacks. It’s not cheap for the bulk seller. My fees range between £200 and £400 per month just for EBay, with PayPal (their payment processing facility) on the top of that. There are steps you can take to minimise fees, such as opening an EBay store which has cheaper listing fees. But it’s still an expensive outlet. It was the expense of EBay which made me consider another outlet.

I decided to open a web store at www.magpiejewellery.co.uk. The costs are much lower than EBay, but the exposure of your products at least in the initial stages is also much lower. My main tip when opening a web store is to shop around. There are a wide range of deals available, all with different facilities included. DO NOT take anything for granted; ask lots of questions so you know what you are getting. If you are a novice at web design like I was, tell them what you want the site to do and ask them if they provide the facilities and software to do that. Find out whether they have 24/7 support available. It’s your livelihood, and most internet traffic happens between 7pm and midnight. If your site goes down and there’s no-one there to sort it out, you won’t survive long.

When developing your store, it’s worthwhile to spend a little on the design. The more polished your site looks the more credibility your business will have with the consumer. Concentrate on the experience your customers will have. Think of good sites you have used. Why were they good? What sites have you used that were bad? Why were they bad? Is your navigation easy to follow, logical and structured? Most of my competitors order their beads by type of glass, shape, size. As a beader I knew my primary concern when designing was colour, with shape and materials following behind. So this is how I organised my site.

You should think about your brand image. You want your customers to be able to identify your company easily, to develop a picture of who you are in their minds. Create a logo and colour scheme, and use them consistently on your store, stationery, emails, EBay listings and what ever other contact you have with your customers.

Customer service is essential. Good customer service is the nexus of a successful business. It can be hard to take a step back when it’s your own business, as it may feel like it you they are insulting. I made a conscious decision to offer a no quibble money back guarantee to my customers, as by arguing over a pound or two will lose you a customer and potentially thousands of pounds worth of sales, whereas biting the bullet will make them come back time after time. The first time I heard I had been recommended at a craft fair I was chuffed to bits. I have never exhibited at a craft fair!

Back office facilities are essential to the successful business. Records must be kept of your accounts, so you know how you are doing. List of customers with their contact details, order histories and previous communications are essential. If you have a lot of different products, inventory control is a must. Think about what you need to keep a note of, then consider how you will do it. Remember, all customer details must be secure under the Data Protection Act. How can you comply with this legislation? IS there other legislation you should be aware of?

Having completed your store, you need to consider how to publicise it. I’m not going to talk in depth about promotion, as there are many sources of that information on the net. As a guide, consider links to and from your site, search engine submission and optimisation, press publicity and articles.

The last essential of business is the bank account. You will need to be able to take cheque payments, process card payments, complete bank transfers, pay staff, save for your taxes, and pay yourself. A supportive bank is essential as business does not always go well. Ask other small business owners for recommendations. Check bank rates, as they can vary widely. Shop around for the best deals, as banks want your business.

For card processing, I have to date continued to use PayPal. It has safeguards built in for the retailer, and has none of the set up costs of a traditional bank’s card processing. I may change this in the future, or I may not. One thing PayPal won’t tell you though, they have cheaper rates for business. PayPal operates a banded structure for its fees, depending on your income through them. They will not apply the cheaper rates unless you ask them to.

Having set up your business, it’s down to the hard work. I can work up to 14 hours a day. However, I do that when I want to, not at someone else’s direction. I stop when my son is up and about, and spend time with him. I sometimes lack sleep, but I’m happier than I have been in years. I would not go back now.

For the future, I have big plans. We’re moving to a new location where I can bring up my son away from the city. It a deprived area, so I can get aid for the business in return for creating jobs. I shall need a few staff in the near future, especially as I have some publicity coming out soon. The business continues from strength to strength, and my customers come back time after time. I’m going into wholesale in the next year, taking advantage of my contact with the many manufacturers.

A business is a fluid thing, almost lifelike in its constant changes, evolving around the market. Keep an open mind; do your homework, spot a gap, then go for it. If you want it enough you may just succeed. And if you don’t, remember that most successful entrepreneurs only achieve success with their 4th project. They have failed 3 times before making it. So, are you an entrepreneur in waiting?

Avast Antivirus Home Edition

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 3:37 pm

Prior to trying the Avast 4.6 Home Edition, I was very much a Norton user. I knew there were a lot of free antivirus software out there but I wanted to be on the safe side and use something tried and true. However, with the increase of spyware and virus attacks, my computer was not always spared and there were times I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it. That’s when I thought that it was time to try something new – and free.

Installation is very easy. Just download the software from the Avast website, free of charge. The only catch – if you can consider it that – is that it is for personal, non-commercial use only. The installation process is mostly automatic. You can choose to register it after installation in order to access free updates for one year. If you do not choose to register it then you can use it for 60 days free. Since the registration is free as well, there is no reason not to do that.

The user interface is simple and easy to use. Some people might not find that it doesn’t suit their taste as it looks something like Winamp – it looks fun, not very serious. However, that doesn’t take away its functionality. It actually adds to the experience as you can change the skin if you want to.

It gives you the option to run 7 providers. You can choose which ones you want to run. I use the following shields: Instant Messaging, Internet Mail, Network Shield, P2P Shield, Standard Shield, and Web Shield. If you use Outlook then you can opt to use that provider as well. The above-mentioned shields pretty much cover everything you do on your computer, providing extensive protection. The Web Shield is by far the latest impressive addition to this release. It monitors all internet traffic including spyware. It is also compatible with most internet browsers. If you are worried about the effect on speed, your worries are unfounded.

A drawback of this software is that it takes too much time to load up when you first turn your computer on. It may take several minutes. In the meantime, it would be difficult for you to run applications.

I think that is a minor inconvenience you can put up with. For something that is free and works effectively, I wouldn’t mind waiting for a couple of minutes.

How to Become a Bodybuilding Champion – The Art of Off-Season Training

Filed under: Uncategorized @ 5:10 am

It would be safe to say that most competitors who gain a lot of weight and let themselves go during their off season have a shorter bodybuilding career than others. Why is this? Who won the race the Tortoise or the Hare? Why?

All or nothing, fat in the off-season- lean in the on-season behaviors never finishes the race.

Becoming a champion is like training for a marathon for twelve months. There is no taking off a month of running expecting to be right were you left off, neither is there a off-season to gain too much weight or for some not even train. I never understood that. Sure some weight gain is necessary an unavoidable, but to let yourself go in quest of size and strength, give me a break.

One big goal of your off-season training program is to bring weaker developed body-parts up proportionally. This can be accomplished without gaining a lot of weight in the off season. The most weight over my contest weight that I reached was twenty pounds and that was after I won my first contest. From then on I maintained fifteen pounds over my weigh-in weight during the off-seasons.

Another mindset is, allow the off-season to be a time of trying new training techniques and foods. The Art of Bodybuilding lies in the process of learning not the trophies. Do not be afraid to change things up every so often. Off-season training times are good days to learn.

This accomplished numerous things like:

1. Cuts down on the muscle tissue that you potentially lose during the dieting phase.

2. You don’t tend to go into depression because you feel you are losing size before a show.

3. You have a better understanding of the sport and the meaning for doing it.

4. You continue to see the true muscularity and development of the weaker muscles that you need to work on.

The Art of off-season training is the consistency, variety and the efficiency of training both your mind and body for the long haul. Your biggest competitor most likely will be your ego!
